Manitou addresses market barriers with its new rotating telehandlers
Part One
By Guy Ramsey

Image 1: The MRT 1432 is Manitou's new enrtry level rotating telehandler.

July 21, 2004 - Some industry insiders say the global market for rotating telescopic handlers has grown to as many as 1,200 units per year with a 10% annual growth rate. Yet, many describe these versatile forklifts as niche products. With these numbers, they can hardly be boxed into that description -at least not in the global marketplace.

In the U.S. market, however, which is dominated by rental organizations modeled to rent mainstream products, few companies are willing to take the time or risk the capital to develop the “niche” demand for this type of telehandler. It is reasonable to expect that the appeal of rotating telehandlers will remain and grow among retail customers. Its multi-tasking capabilities make it ideal for heavy industry, contractors, and owner-operators looking for a do-it-all piece of equipment.

Manitou, which first introduced a rotating telehandler here in 2000, has recognized the need to address two distinct markets in order to develop the concept in North America . The MRT 2150 and MRT 1432, introduced earlier this year, have vastly different capabilities and carry price tags to match. These units replace the MRT 1850, the company's original introduction in North America . Part One of a two-part series follows on Manitou's new MRT models. Watch the next issue of Lift and Access 360 for a full evaluation of the MRT 1432...Read Full Story

By Glen Sider

Glen Sider is the operations manager for the National Equipment Register, Inc. ( NER ), New York, N.Y. Additionally, NER partners with key industry groups to centralize information on equipment theft and ownership. Sider manages the NER databases, supervises NER analysts working with law enforcement, and develops and provides training in heavy equipment identification for law enforcement. You can reach Glen Sider at gsider@NERusa.com . The 2003 Equipment Theft Report and a Risk Management Guide can be viewed at www.NER.usa.com .

July 21, 2004 - Seeking to define the problem of heavy equipment theft, NER recently published its first annual study for equipment owners, insurance companies, and law enforcement. An analysis of that study provides fleet owners and risk managers with ammunition to protect their investment. And, while lift equipment as a category is one of the least targeted types of equipment, rental companies are particularly vulnerable to theft. By the very nature of their business, equipment is usually under the control of someone other than themselves...Read Full Story

JLG's ServicePLUS
The Human Factor

By Guy Ramsey

July 21, 2004 - The recent announcement by JLG Industries, McConnellsburg, Pa., about the formation of ServicePlus is yet another signal of the trend for aerial work platform producers serving as their own quasi-distributors.

Since the beginning of this crazy business the only constant has been that distribution of aerial work platform equipment has been unconventional. Because rental fleets absorbed the vast majority if this equipment, OEMs have sold equipment directly to hundreds of independent rental operators. Many rental companies strove to make service a big part of their business—and did so successfully. But as rental companies consolidated, service as a profit center slipped down the priority list for many, creating a service void for AWP owners and a lack of local product support for many large fleet owners...
