Bruce Whitten is the chairman of the Florida Crane Owners Council (FCOC) and works for Fred's Crane Service in Orlando. The FCOC has been working with the Florida State Legislature to pass a bill regarding crane operator certification. Whitten says the FCOC wants to make sure the bill covers all aspects of the crane industry: including signal persons and riggers. They are strong advocates of certification, and Whitten says he believes it could become a nationwide trend. Martinsville, Va., March 2007 - A man was injured when he was struck in the head by a rough-terrain crane as it tipped. The man tried to run out of the way after the operator sounded the crane's horn to warn him but tripped over some bags of fertilizer. “That's when the boom hit him in the back of the head,” said a Virginia state trooper. After investigating the accident along with other state police officers, the state trooper said it was apparent that the crane tipped because the outriggers on one side were not fully extended, causing it to tip. ...Read Full Story
