Caterpillar Announces New Tier 4 Interim Industrial Engines

Caterpillar, Peoria, Ill., has announced the introduction of the three latest additions to the Cat Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB technology industrial engine lineup: the Cat C3.4B, C4.4 ACERT and the C6.6 ACERT. The new models cover the horsepower band from 60 to 174 hp and provide more engine options for OEMs of agricultural, construction, material handling and general industrial equipment. All of these engines are available with a wide choice of options that are well suited for compact and mid-range equipment. The addition of the C3.4B, C4.4 ACERT and C6.6 ACERT brings the total Cat Industrial Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB engine count to 15.

The new C3.4B offers industry-leading power density and compactness suitable for many application requirements. The compact engine provides more power with ratings from 60 to 115 bhp and high torque up to 310 foot-pounds. It features a dependable common rail fuel injection system, smart waste-gated turbocharger, aftercooler and is electronically controlled to deliver world-class performance and fuel economy.

Complementing the midrange of these engines is the new C4.4 ACERT providing 80 to 174 bhp. The popular 4.4 liter, 4-cylinder engine has received a significant upgrade and now provides a 22 percent increase in power to 174 hp. Depending on the power required, it is equipped with a single or series turbocharger. The newly designed head, block and common rail fuel system delivers excellent fuel economy and class leading torque up to 553 foot-pounds. The new platform features a class-leading range of options and after-treatment configurations for maximum, reliable productivity and ease of installation.

The new C6.6 ACERT is a 6.6-liter platform delivering 120 to 174 bhp and a peak torque of up to 609 foot-pounds at low engine speed. The high torque capability and low end response make this an excellent choice for many machines that currently utilize engines over 175 bhp.

Through extensive Caterpillar application and integration experience, these new engine platforms have optimized fuel consumption to the actual operating cycles of off-highway machines. Compared to existing Tier 3/Stage IIIA engines, these new engines produce fuel consumption improvements across the entire horsepower band. Fuel economy improvements can be subject to application, ratings and operating conditions. The C3.4B, C4.4 ACERT and C6.6 ACERT will begin production and distribution prior to 2012, the year that Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emissions standards take effect for this power category of engines. The C7.1 ACERT and C9.3 ACERT will be available prior to 2011, the year that Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB emissions standards take effect for this power category of engines.

When completely unveiled, the Cat Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB industrial engine lineup will include over twenty models from 11 to 1,200 hp. As with all Cat ACERT Tier 4 Interim/Stage IIIB compliant engines, ACERT Technologies are the key enabler to achieve a significant 90 percent reduction of particulate matter and a 45 percent reduction of oxides of nitrogen.
