OSHA Seeking Comments on Proposed Crane Operator Certification Rule

WASHINGTON, D.C. – OSHA is seeking public comment until June 20 on its proposed rule aiming to clarify crane operator certification requirements.  

The proposal reinstates the employer duty to ensure that a crane operator is qualified to safely operate equipment, OSHA said.

REDMOND, Wash. – As part of OSHA’s National Safety Stand-Down Week from May 7-11, Genie revealed a prototype of the Lift Guard Contact Alarm system for Genie GS slab scissor lifts and Genie GR, GRC, and QS vertical masts.

The system is an electronic secondary guarding solution designed to activate when an obstruction makes contact with an activation whisker mounted to the lift’s platform guardrails, alerting operators, occupants, and ground personnel to a potential hazard.

Fall Protection Leads OSHA’s ‘Top 10’ List of Most Frequently Cited Violations

The preliminary list of OSHA’s Top 10 violations for Fiscal Year 2017 remained largely unchanged from FY 2016, except for one new addition: Fall Protection – Training Requirements (1926.503) entered the list at No. 9 with 1,523 violations, just ahead of Electrical – Wiring Methods (1,405 violations). The entire list was revealed during the 2017 National Safety Council’s Congress & Expo.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) today issued a Notice of Proposed Rulemaking to extend the employer's responsibility to ensure crane operator competency and enforcement for crane operator certification to Nov. 10, 2018.

OSHA issued a final rule in September 2014, extending the deadline by three years for crane operator certification requirements in the Cranes and Derricks in Construction standard. The final rule also extended by three years the employer's responsibility to ensure that crane operators are competent to operate a crane safely.
