Spartan Mat Places Large Order with Axion for Recycled-Polymer Mats | Construction News

Axion International Holdings Inc., Zanesville, Ohio, a leader in structural polymer solutions, including Ecotrax rail ties and Struxure construction mats, has received a purchase order for more than 300 Struxure heavy construction mats from Spartan Mat LLC.

The order consists of 45-in. x 16-, 18-, and 20-ft. mats that will be sold and rented across the U.S. for civil, oil and gas projects. Axion has received multiple orders from Spartan Mat in 2014.

The Struxure mats are being made on a new assembly line in Axion's Texas manufacturing plant, which is part of an operational expansion to keep up with increasing demand for the company's engineered products.

Axion's heavy mats are designed to be temporary support surfaces under active heavy equipment with tracks or treads in wet and harsh-temperature environments. Struxure mats maintain structural integrity in wet conditions and are estimated to last five times as long as hardwood alternatives.

"There is a tremendous opportunity for our Struxure heavy mats in diverse applications across the oil, gas, and various civil infrastructure projects," said Axion's EVP for Building Products Dave Crane. "Spartan Mat, LLC has been a great supporter of ours, and we have worked closely with them to strengthen our position in the industry."

Crane said he believes his company's engineered solutions are going to be used even more in both domestic and international markets and that more purchase orders are on the horizon.

"Axion has an excellent reputation and is known for its high-quality products," said Spartan Mat founder Justin Thelin, who added that Axion mats fill a niche in Spartan Mats' product portfolio.

Spartan Mat, LLC, based in Olive Branch, Mississippi, produces and supplies crane mats, timber mats, laminated mats, and composite mats, all used for pipeline, wind farm, marine barges, crane work and transmission and distribution line work.

Struxure heavy construction mats are engineered using Axion's  patented recycled-polymer technology, which Axion says makes them strong, durable, and resistant to rot, fungus, insects, and moisture. Axion also says that Struxure mats do not absorb or release any liquids or chemicals into the environment.
