Freightliner Showcased New Severe Duty Crane Products at ConExpo-Con/Agg

Freightliner Trucks, Portland, Ore., showcased its new line of Severe Duty (SD) chassis that are suited for the boom truck market at ConExpo-Con/Agg 2011.

The 108SD and 114SD truck models provide the ideal solution for compact packaging and robust power offerings that can accommodate all types of crane configurations and capacities from eight to 50 tons.

The new SD line of products features mid-chassis packaging that provide for crane outrigger clearance and rail mounted hydraulic tanks, while front frame extensions are available with radiator mounted grilles to accommodate front bumper stabilizers and load block storage. Factory-installed PTO’s and in-dash PTO switches eliminate the need for crane suppliers to cut into the dash panel, resulting in a clean fit and finish. Freightliner’s proprietary SmartPlex multiplexing electrical system allows for crane-centric safety features like boom and outrigger storage indicator lights.

The Freightliner 108SD features a 108-inch BBC and is designed for cranes rated from eight to 30 tons. The 108SD’s superior visibility and maneuverability make it ideal for daily rental, roofing and tree service.

The 108SD features a 42-inch set back axle position with ratings that range from 10,000- to 20,000-pound front axles, and single and tandem rear axles that range from 21,000- to 46,000-pounds. The 108SD is available with the Cummins ISB and ISC engines, providing a power range of 200- to 350-hp and 520- to 1,000-pounds/feet of torque.

Designed for larger capacity cranes with ratings from 30- to 50-tons, the 114SD is available in both set forward and set back axle positions and offers premium power with the Detroit Diesel DD13 engine featuring BlueTec emissions technology. The optional lightweight Cummins ISC and ISL engines will also be available, and provide a power range from 260- to 380-hp, and 660- to 1,300-pounds/feet of torque.

Perfect for heavy lifting applications, like oil field service and steel works, the 114SD is available with front axle ratings that range from 10,000- to 23,000-pounds, and heavy rear axle configurations for single axles up to 38,000 pounds, tandem axles up to 58,000 pounds and tridem axles rated up to 69,000 pounds.

Freightliner Trucks worked with Georgetown, Texas-based Manitex for the ConExpo-Con/Agg display boom, and features the Manitex model 40124S. Offering a 40-ton base capacity, the 40124S features a five-section 124-foot proportional boom with self-lubricating slider pads. Maximum tip height is 189-feet when equipped with an optional two-piece jib, and full, mid and retracted outrigger capacities provide stable lifting from a rigid lower frame.

"Manitex is very pleased to be a part of Freightliner’s introduction of the 114SD,” said Randy Robertson, director, sales and marketing of Manitex. “The installation of the crane went smoothly. It is evident that Freightliner listened to the needs of the truck mounted crane markets. I look forward to adding the 114SD to Manitex's offering of crane chassis."
