Industry Group to Unveil New Best Practices Guide at 2013 ARA Rental Show

An aerial-lift industry group made up of the American Rental Association (ARA), the Associated Equipment Manufacturers (AEM), the Associated Equipment Distributors (AED), the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), and the Scaffold and Access Industry Association (SAIA) plans to unveil its “Statement of Best Practices of Risk Assessment and Product Selection for Aerial Work Platform Equipment” during the ARA Rental Show in February 2013.

The new guide is the third produced by the group, whose previous best-practice guides for aerial work platform use addressed general training and familiarization and fall protection.

“Hazard awareness and prevention is a critical issue that OSHA regulations and ANSI standards require each employer to address,” said Tony Groat, executive vice president of American Work Platform Training (AWPT), the North American arm of IPAF.

“Performing a site risk assessment is a precursor to the selection of equipment to safely perform the work,” Groat explained. “Providing the AWP operator with notice of potential hazards and providing the means to protect against identified hazards is key to risk management.”

The current best-practice guides can be downloaded free from the websites of the industry associations listed above.
