Odyne to Use Remy Electric Motors with its Plug-In Hybrid Systems for Trucks

Odyne Systems, LLC, Waukesha, Wis., has signed a long-term agreement to use electric motors from Remy Electric Motors Inc., Pendleton, Ind., in Odyne plug-in hybrid systems for medium- and heavy-duty trucks. The Odyne hybrid system increases a truck’s on-road fuel efficiency, provides launch assist, and uses regenerative braking. Once a truck is stationary on site, the hybrid system can power applications without using the truck engine.

"This partnership between Remy and Odyne brings together two innovative companies whose technologies will deliver better performance for medium and large work vehicles,” said Joe Dalum, president and chief executive officer of Odyne Systems.

“As part of Odyne’s unique system, Remy’s HVH motor will help reduce operating costs through higher efficiency and will provide enough quiet power onsite with Odyne’s battery system to run truck-mounted equipment for hours with the engine off. This collaboration with Remy will build upon our strong experience in helping companies reduce their carbon footprint and meet sustainable energy goals. This partnership is especially relevant with today’s high fuel prices,” Dalum added.

Odyne has developed proprietary and patented hybrid technology combining reliable electric power conversion, power control, and energy storage technology with advanced electric propulsion motors, modular battery systems and other components. The company says its Odyne plug-in hybrid drive system reduces fleet operating and maintenance costs, and can improve large-truck fuel economy by up to 50 percent or more, compared to traditional diesel engines.

Remy Electric Motors VP/General Manager Kevin Quinn said, “The integration of Remy’s electric motor into Odyne’s system demonstrates the power and flexibility of our HVH motor. It can power a vehicle, act as a generator, and can provide auxiliary power. With over a billion miles of proven reliability and power on the road, we are delighted our Remy electric motors will now provide that same durability and efficiency for Odyne’s plug-in hybrid system.”

Remy’s patented High Voltage Hairpin (HVH) technology’s torque and power density deliver added speed and range to electric vehicles through direct and regenerative power. The company says that large OEMs, system integrators, and emerging OEMs have chosen the Remy HVH electric motor for its superior technology, reliability and the speed to market that comes with Remy’s existing global production capacity.

Odyne’s plug-in hybrid systems for medium and heavy duty trucks are a turnkey hybrid solution for companies that use vehicles with driving cycles featuring a high percentage of starting and stopping, along with extended jobsite idling time. Odyne says companies operating utility or work trucks with this profile benefit significantly by using its proprietary parallel plug-in hybrid system. Odyne’s unique modular system can be installed on a wide variety of new and existing vehicles to reduce fuel consumption, lower emissions and operate quietly at the jobsite.

Odyne says its systems featuring the Remy motor provide:

  • More acceleration, with more power than competitors
  • Better ability to operate equipment with high loads
  • Quieter jobsite operation and longer operating time with the engine off
  • Reliability from proven motor core that has excellent quality record
  • Cost advantages of leading suppliers and a unique hybrid system.
