Powered Access Accident Kills Two Workers, Critically Injures Third | Construction News

Port Everglades, Fla.—Two workers were killed and a third was taken to a medical center in critical condition when a 40-ft. tall scissor lift tipped over onto concrete pavement at a dock. The accident happened while the workers were elevated in the access platform to repair a passenger gangway used by cruise ships. The scissor lift was on a concrete surface, the day was sunny, and winds were reportedly only 8 mph with gusts to 13 mph at the time. The Broward Sheriff's Office is trying to determine what caused the four-story-high scissor lift to tip over. OSHA has no authority to investigate because the three workers are public employees. – www.sun-sentinel.com
