Construction Safety Program Now Offered in Spanish

Nashville, Tenn.-based PureSafety, a leading provider of online safety training and risk management software solutions, has released a new online Spanish OSHA 10-hour program for construction. The program is available along with 10-hour programs in English for construction and general industry.

The rate of U.S. Hispanic employment in the construction industry has grown significantly in recent years. According to the Pew Hispanic Center, two-thirds of all new construction jobs in 2006 were filled by workers of Hispanic descent, many of whom speak Spanish as a first language or are bilingual. This has highlighted the need for more accessible workplace safety education and training in both English and Spanish that can help mitigate risk and on-the-job injuries.

“The need for more bilingual education and training is particularly important to our construction clients with Spanish-speaking employees,” said Mike Kroll, senior vice president of sales for PureSafety. “PureSafety provides a convenient, cost-effective and consistent method to deliver OSHA 10-hour and other general safety training to a diverse workforce.”

“According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, while overall workplace fatalities have dropped 20 percent in the last decade, workplace fatalities among Hispanic workers, especially those working in the construction industry, have risen almost 35 percent in the same period,” said Shane Austin, CSP, director of safety and risk management for PureSafety. “In 2006, 937 fatal work injuries, a series high, involved Hispanic or Latino workers. These statistics are unacceptable and are the primary reason PureSafety is committed to providing the most comprehensive online Spanish course library in the industry.”

All PureSafety 10-hour courses are interactive and students have six months to complete their training. Every student who successfully completes either program will receive a 10-hour completion card and 1.0 IACET-approved CEUs.
