Buckner Purchases Four Liebherr 600-Ton Crawlers

Buckner Cos., based in Graham, N.C., is adding an initial four new Liebherr LR 1600/2 lattice boom crawler cranes to its Heavylift Cranes division, with the likelihood of more to follow. The company has spent the last 10 years building what it claims is now North America’s largest fleet of Liebherr crawlers in order to enhance its position as a leading heavylift specialist. Of the company’s more than 80 crawlers, 13 are the Liebherr 440-ton LR 1400/2 crawler. Buckner also has LR 1350 and the 830-ton LR 1750 cranes in its fleet. While the popularity of the 440-ton crane class continues, Buckner sees growing demand for machines in the 600-ton class. “With all the power work coming up—conventional, nuclear and wind—this size of crane is becoming more the norm,” says Doug Williams, Buckner president. The first of Buckner’s new LR 1600/2 cranes was delivered in September 2009.

The second unit followed in November 2009. The third unit is scheduled for delivery in the third quarter of this year, and the fourth unit in the first quarter of 2011.
