Five CIC Certifications Receive Re-Accreditation from NCCA | Construction News

In construction news, Crane Institute Certification (CIC) has had four crane operator certification programs and one rigger/signalperson program re-accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).

Programs include:

  • Large Telescoping Boom Crane Over 75 tons (CIC-LTB)
  • Small Lattice Boom Crawler/Truck 1 to 300 tons (CIC-SLBC/T)
  • Medium Telescoping Boom Crane 21 to 75 tons (CIC-MTB)
  • Small Telescoping Boom Crane under 21 tons (CIC-STB)
  • Qualified Rigger & Signalperson (CIC-QR/S)

Debbie Dickinson, executive director of CIC, reports: "CIC programs were first accredited in 2008 and are now re-accredited until 2018. In addition, we are in the process of developing new programs that are in the accreditation process. Two members of the CIC team, Candice Eldredge and Angela Strange, worked with industry experts, maintaining big smiles and strong tenacity to get the work done in a timely manner with a quality result. Alexandria Muller, PhD and Jackie Brule, from CIC's testing partner 4ROI, were also outstanding contributors to the task."

According to Dickinson, accreditation is a rigorous process that prevents "back room" test development. Tests must withstand the scrutiny of dozens of crane and rigging experts as well as demonstrate compliance with the NCCA Standards for the Accreditation of Certification Programs. "With this many certifications, data is based on literally thousands of points of industry input," she said. The hardest task may be debatable but Dickinson says, "Facilitating agreement between the experts on the best approach is high on the list."

Jim Headley, founding member of the CIC Governing Board, summed up the achievement: "We are thankful to and appreciative of the dedication of the experts serving on the CIC committees."
