Manitowoc 31000 to Begin Assembly

The 2,300-metric ton Manitowoc 31000, unveiled in concept to buyers at ConExpo in March 2008, has completed fabrication processes and is headed to the factory to begin assembly, said Allen Kadow, crawler crane manager of product marketing for the Manitowoc, Wis.-based company. “Assembly should begin in March,” he said.

The crane features a patented variable position counterweight system that automatically extends to maintain optimum load moment during a lift. And for a crane this size, it breaks down into easy-to-handle components, estimated at about 112 truckloads full-up.

“This crane will change the way people look at the super heavyweight cranes,” said Kadow.

The first two units, pre-sold to Crane Rental Corp., Orlando, Fla., and Bulldog Erectors, Newberry, S.C., will ship in 2010.
