Talbert to Show Spread-Axle Trailer with New Equalizer at Mid-America Truck Show

Talbert Manufacturing, Rensselaer, Ind., will feature its 55SA Trailer outfitted with The Equalizer™ at the Mid America Truck Show in Louisville, Ky., March 25-27. The Equalizer is Talbert’s new nitrogen-assisted dampening system, which hydraulically transfers loads in all terrains. The system is available for use with Talbert 55SA (55-ton) and 60SA (60-ton) 3+1 spread axle series trailers and axle attachments.

The displayed trailer also features a custom paint and chrome package specified by its buyer, Suburban Towing Services, a Louisville-based towing, recovery and heavy equipment hauler. Owner Irvin Johns purchased the trailer to expand his service region. “We chose this particular Talbert trailer as we need to haul into states that require the fourth axle to be at least 14’1” from the spread on the last axle. Plus the Talbert trailer holds its value. It’s one of the best brands on the market,” says Johns.

Suburban Towing purchased its new trailer from Holt Equipment, a Talbert dealer based in Louisville. According to Holt Equipment, its long-standing relationship with both Talbert Manufacturing and Suburban Towing, allowed them to specify the right unit for the customer’s needs and to customize it. The Talbert 55SA is a hydraulic detachable gooseneck trailer that features a non-ground bearing hydraulic gooseneck design, a 108” swing radius, a 25’-0” deck length and 8’-6” deck width. “We like the loading ease on this unit because of the way the rails are designed. And, we like the flexibility as we can run it either as a four in a row or we can put the stinger on it and run it as a 3 +1,” says Johns.

With The Equalizer, customers gain the benefits of a distinctive suspension system that oscillates around a central self-tracking pivot point to provide proportionate weight distribution in each axle grouping, regardless of varying road conditions. With the simple user-friendly system, operators can make easy and quick adjustments, and maintain those settings to maximize loads safely and efficiently. By hydraulically dampening axle movement and controlling load transfer, the suspension system absorbs hauling and loading shocks; providing a greater range of suspension movement for reduced stress and a smoother ride.

In addition to its advanced design, The Equalizer incorporates a dual two-speed landing gear, making the task of connecting the trailer to the axle attachment much easier. The system’s design also allows the axle attachment to be lifted out of the way easily for backing. Since no shimming is required, considerable time is also saved operationally, and empty travel is possible without removing the booster and attachment. The Equalizer allows a 14’1” spread with 54” axle spacing; and a 14’7” spread with 60” axle spacing. The system is powered by a Honda gas engine power pack as standard.
