Manitowoc Lays Off Boilermakers after Machinists Strike

Manitowoc, Manitowoc, Wis., laid off 156 boilermakers union workers after union machinists went on strike this week at the crane manufacturer’s plant. According to a news report, the boilermakers were told not to report to work next Monday.

The approximately 200 members of machinists’ union rejected a proposed four-year labor contract and went on strike as a result. No further contract talks have been scheduled, although Manitowoc, whose crane division employees 800 people, says a federal mediator will probably be called in.
