New Boom Truck Crane Cab from Altec | Construction News

At ConExpo, Altec introduced a new crane cab design that tilts 20° and offers dual entrances for operators. The cab is standard on the AC45-127S boom truck, and it is optional equipment for a number of other Altec crane models.

With most truck-mounted cranes, operators must climb up a vertical ladder to climb in the side entrance of the crane cab in order to access the crane controls. This exposes the operator to slip-trip-fall hazards. Altec cab’s front entry was designed to reduce the hazard exposure when the crane is in the stowed position. According to Altec, a front entrance is the safest way to access the crane controls when the crane is in the stowed position, or when the crane is positioned 180° from the stowed position. However, when only a front entrance is provided, the operator must return the crane to the stowed position to enter or leave the cab. The new addition of the side entry provides convenient access/egress when the crane is positioned perpendicular to the carrier, providing access to the controls from any position throughout the crane’s range of rotation.

The dual-entry cab’s 20° tilt feature also improves the viewing spectrum while reducing operator neck strain and associated fatigue when handling loads at height. When handling loads at ground level and short radii, Altec’s dual entrance cab provides direct line-of-sight. The structural design also minimizes viewing obstructions and maximizes viewing spectrum.

Front and top surfaces are made of shatter-resistant thermoplastic polymer to reduce falling object hazard exposure for the operator. The transparent surfaces are slightly tinted, which reduces solar load. Additional air ducting increases operator comfort.
