Wooden Matting Protects Soldier Field During Crane Work | Construction News

TerraLam matting from Sterling Lumber protected the playing surface at Chicago's Soldier Field, home of the NFL's Chicago Bears, for about three months while cranes renovated the stadium's jumbo video screens.

The Chicago Park District, which operates the stadium, was looking for a simple and economical way to protect the field during screen renovations and change out. It wanted to minimize soil disturbance and compaction, and to also protect underground coils, pipes and utilities while a 350-ton Liebherr LTN 300 mobile crane and support vehicles removed the old screens and installed upgrades.

The Park District chose TerraLam matting from Sterling Lumber, which Midwest Access Solutions installed in seven days. The alternative would have been buying and placing 6' x 10' x 2" steel plates on the field, which Sterling Lumber reports would have cost twice as much.
