Caterpillar Launches Cat C32B Engine with Higher Power Density

Caterpillar has introduced the Cat C32B, a new diesel engine platform designed to provide improved power density, durability and uptime for off-highway machines, including aerial and lifting equipment.

The C32B delivers 1,200 horsepower (895 kilowatts) for U.S. EPA Tier 4 Final, 1,125 horsepower (839 kilowatts) for EU Stage V and up to 1,350 horsepower (1,007 kilowatts) in less regulated markets. Torque ratings reach 4,548 pound-feet (6,166 newton-meters), giving the engine the capability to power some of the largest lifting and material handling machines in operation.

“For nearly 20 years, the Cat C32 engine platform has set the standard for premium power and endurance in construction, mining and other industrial applications,” said Steve Ferguson, senior vice president of Caterpillar Industrial Power Systems. “The new Cat C32B builds on this field-proven reputation with a series of upgrades and new technologies that will drive the superior performance of off-highway equipment for years to come.”

The new engine incorporates structural enhancements such as a redesigned block, larger crankshaft journals and improved bearing surfaces. An updated lubrication system, upgraded piston design and improved head-to-block sealing further extend service life.

The C32B also features a maintenance-free diesel oxidation catalyst (DOC) aftertreatment system that eliminates DEF requirements, simplifying integration for OEMs and reducing operating costs for equipment owners.
