Close the Empathy Gap in Lifting

This June, prioritize men’s health in lifting with screenings, support and open dialogue.

Close the Empathy Gap in Lifting

In the lifting and access equipment industry, employees often face intense physical demands — whether they’re operating MEWPs at height, managing equipment on uneven terrain or working long shifts in changing environments. But while jobsite safety is always top of mind, personal health often takes a backseat.

Men’s Health Month, observed each June, promotes awareness of preventable health issues and encourages men and their families to prioritize routine screenings and healthier habits. Nationally, men experience higher rates of serious conditions like diabetes, obesity, heart disease, cancer and premature death, and they live an average of five years less than women.

The toll of the work is real: loud equipment, high stress, exposure to weather extremes and long hours contribute to chronic fatigue and overlooked symptoms. Add to that the persistent stigma around seeking medical care or talking about mental health — and important issues may go unchecked.

This year’s Men’s Health Month theme, “Closing the Empathy Gap,” encourages employers, coworkers and families to make space for open, judgment-free conversations about physical and mental health. Promoting empathy in the workplace doesn’t just boost morale, it can also save lives.

Here’s how to help close the gap on your site:

  • Encourage coworkers to schedule routine doctor visits and screenings.
  • Share mental health and wellness resources during safety meetings.
  • Lead by example — talk openly about your own health priorities or challenges.
  • Make room in schedules for preventive care and time off when needed.
