Man Lift Mfg. Co. (“MLM”) is has relocated its office and production facility to North Carolina.

The new plant in Shelby, N.C., includes a 227,000-sq.-ft. contract manufacturing facility, improved technologies, and new systems aimed to streamline processes and prepare for future growth.

Universal Mfg. Co., the parent company of MLM, acquired the facility in a recent purchase of a contract manufacturing and armor and defense contracting business. The leadership team from MLM will relocate to North Carolina to manage all three companies as a single operation.

“We are excited to move to a facility that allows us to take our business to the next level and increase our manufacturing capacity. We expect that our customers will be happy with the increased aftermarket support capabilities and larger engineering team we are building,” said Phil Sprio, president and CEO.

“This opportunity allows us to take our core manufacturing and engineering strengths and not only improve our current MLM operation but also branch out into new projects and opportunities," Sprio added. "We have always worked hard to provide our customers with solutions that provide increased safety and productivity. We now look forward to helping our war fighters increase their safety and be more productive as well.”

Since operations have moved to North Carolina, MLM has tripled the size of the engineering staff and hired Callum Sullivan as its new vice president of engineering. Sullivan’s recent engineering background is in aerospace. MLM says it is excited to bring the same kind of engineering precision and discipline required in aerospace work to its products.

In addition to the benefits of acquiring a modern contract manufacturing facility with state-of-the-art equipment is a robust and mature quality department. MLM has hired Graeme McWilliams to head the department. He has 25 years of experience running quality departments for defense contracting companies.

MLM is also making a significant investment in improving the service and warranty department. Eric Tindall, formerly MLM production floor leader, now leads the Aftermarket Sales and Service department. Tindall's experience in building most of MLM’s machines over the last three years gives him a wealth of technical and leadership experience to his new position.

“We are taking full advantage of this opportunity to grow and improve MLM,” said Sprio. “Our long-term customers have seen major improvements when new management was brought to the company three years ago. The new facility will enable MLM to build leaner, faster, and cheaper because of the new state of the art equipment. But we also have the opportunity to make sure our leadership team, systems, and processes are producing the results and solutions our customers need.”

Man Lift Mfg. Co. provides custom aerial work platforms and is a leading manufacturer of explosion proof mobile hydraulic equipment, both in the United States and around the world.
