MEC Introduces Lookout Obstacle Detection for Scissor Lifts

MEC's Lookout system adds front, rear, and overhead obstacle detection to slab scissor lifts, with retrofit and factory-install options.

MEC Aerial Work Platforms has introduced the Lookout Sensing System, an obstacle-detection technology for slab scissor lifts designed to reduce collision risks during operation. The first offering, Lookout – Platform, combines front and rear obstacle detection during driving with overhead sensing during lifting.

Scissor lifts often operate in confined spaces near walls, building infrastructure, and installed equipment. On projects such as data center construction, facility owners and safety managers have used additional spotters, protective bumpers, and restrictions on driving lifts with elevated platforms to address potential collision risks. MEC said these measures can increase labor and material costs and slow construction progress.

“We're seeing more jobsites introduce measures to protect valuable equipment and facilities,” said Corey Raymo, director of aerial work platform products at MEC. “Those precautions address real risks, but they can also limit worker productivity. Lookout gives owners and contractors another tool to manage those risks while supporting safer, more productive operation.”

Lookout – Platform uses four ultrasonic sensors positioned at the front and rear of the platform. The sensors detect obstacles in the direction of travel and overhead when the lift is raised. As the machine approaches an obstacle, the system provides progressive warnings, reduces machine speed, and stops movement at a preset distance.

An audible alert notifies the operator when an obstacle enters the active sensing zone. The system then automatically reduces speed as the lift approaches the obstacle, allowing the operator more time to assess the surroundings. If the work requires closer positioning, the operator can override the stop and continue at creep speed.

Technicians can configure the system for either warn, slow, and stop functions or warn and slow functions, depending on jobsite requirements.

The Lookout Sensing System builds on MEC's Proactive Platform Safety System (PPSS) and uses ultrasonic technology. Lookout – Platform is available as an optional retrofit kit for compatible MEC slab scissor lifts. MEC said installation typically takes 10 to 15 minutes, allowing rental fleets to add the system to existing equipment.

The system is also planned as a factory-installed option on new slab scissor lift orders beginning in November 2026. MEC said additional offerings in the Lookout Sensing System lineup are planned.
