National Safety Awareness in Lifting

National Safety Awareness Month offers reminders and tools to help lift operators stay injury-free.

National Safety Awareness in Lifting

June is National Safety Awareness Month, a reminder that even one injury is one too many. In the access equipment industry, hazards are amplified, where operators work at height, around power lines and on uneven terrain. Taking simple steps toward safer practices can save lives.

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, 342 workers died from aerial lift-related incidents between 2011 and 2021. The most common causes were falls, tip-overs and electrocutions. These incidents are often preventable with proper training, equipment inspections and site planning.

Each week of June highlights a core safety theme from the National Safety Council:

  • Continuous Improvement – Regularly assess and update safety protocols
  • .Employee Engagement – Empower workers to report concerns and suggest improvements.
  • Roadway Safety – Stay alert during transport and setup, especially near traffic.
  • Mental & Physical Wellbeing – Address fatigue, stress, and overall health.

Operators of MEWPs and telehandlers can improve site safety by wearing fall protection, using equipment on stable surfaces and maintaining minimum approach distances from energized power lines. Pre-operation walkarounds and regular maintenance can also reduce the risk of mechanical failure.

Injury prevention starts with awareness. Learn more about the benefits of getting involved from the National Safety Council.
