Construction Safety Week served as the backdrop for new guidance from United Rentals, which highlighted five practical strategies contractors can use to improve jobsite safety, maintain compliance and support productivity across construction projects.

The company said the recommendations are intended to help contractors reduce risk, protect workers and strengthen overall safety culture as jobsites become more complex and technology-driven.

“Safety is a leading driver on a jobsite, from protecting people to keeping projects on schedule,” said Teresa Kee, vice president, health and safety, United Rentals. “When contractors take a proactive, systems-based approach to safety, they can reduce risk, improve productivity and strengthen overall project performance. We help customers do that with integrated solutions, expertise and training designed for real jobsite conditions.”

Among the areas highlighted by the company was access management. United Rentals said RFID-enabled access management systems can help contractors control who enters jobsites and who is authorized to operate equipment. According to the company, these systems can improve operational control while helping reduce safety risks tied to unauthorized access.

Preventive maintenance was also identified as a key safety measure. United Rentals said structured equipment inspection and maintenance programs can help contractors identify issues before they lead to equipment failures or delays. The company noted that keeping equipment operating properly can reduce jobsite distractions and improve overall fleet safety.

Ground stabilization was another focus area. The company said ground protection mats can help reduce slips, trips, falls and equipment instability by creating more secure surfaces for workers and heavy equipment. These mats can also help improve traction and reduce surface damage on jobsites.

United Rentals also emphasized the importance of having a designated competent person oversee trenching and excavation work. The company referenced OSHA requirements for competent persons to supervise excavation activities, including soil classification and protective system selection, while noting that ongoing training is important for maintaining compliance with current standards and best practices.

The company additionally pointed to the growing role of remote monitoring technologies on construction sites. According to United Rentals, remote systems that monitor factors such as temperature, humidity and other site conditions can help contractors make decisions related to concrete curing, ground thaw and equipment use while limiting worker exposure to hazardous environments.

United Rentals said its Worksite Performance Solutions platform combines technology, access control and real-time data tools intended to help contractors improve safety and jobsite efficiency. The company also noted that United Academy provides training and certification programs focused on worksite safety and productivity.
