IPAF has released the third video in its “Share Your Story” safety series, continuing its effort to promote learning and incident awareness in the powered access industry.

The video, “Pedestrian Control Incident,” recreates a real-world scenario in which a delivery driver was injured while handling mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) at a manufacturing facility in England. The operator sustained a fractured ankle while maneuvering a scissor lift in pedestrian control mode after failing to maintain a safe distance and becoming distracted by nearby activity.

“Pedestrian control mode is typically used where there are specific risks, such as a risk of crushing from overhead obstructions or uneven ground causing a risk of overturning, but in this case, the machine should have been operated from the platform. The operator also did not maintain a safe distance and was distracted by other activity on site.

“This video demonstrates how the task could have been completed differently — and the incident prevented — with more careful planning and operation,” said Brian Parker, head of safety and technical at IPAF.

IPAF stated that the “Share Your Story” campaign is built on real-life incident experiences shared by industry members. The initiative encourages the reporting of near-misses, incidents and safety improvements to help prevent future accidents and support industry-wide learning.

The organization is inviting contributions from operators, supervisors, managers and companies, noting that shared experiences can help shape training, guidance and future safety campaigns across the powered access sector.
