The Arizona Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America (AZAGC), along with staff from the Maricopa Association of Governments, helped organize the groundbreaking ceremony for the Loop 303 and Interstate 17 interchange, the first project funded under Proposition 479.
The ceremony took place March 6, west of Interstate 17 at the Loop 303 intersection and brought together state leaders, regional policymakers, contractors, engineers and industry partners.
Guests gathered at the nearby Ben Avery Shooting Facility before being transported by shuttle bus to the construction site between the eastbound and westbound lanes of Loop 303.
Arizona Gov. Katie Hobbs, Phoenix Mayor Kate Gallego, Alexis Hermosillo, chair of the Maricopa Association of Governments, and Jerry Weiers, chair of the MAG Transportation Policy Committee, delivered remarks during the event.
The groundbreaking marks the launch of Proposition 479 projects and the start of construction on the Loop 303 and I-17 interchange. The transportation investment plan continues the legacy of earlier voter-approved programs, Propositions 300 and 400, which helped expand Maricopa County’s transportation network.
As part of the ceremony, attendees walked through a timeline highlighting transportation projects completed under the earlier programs. The display concluded with the unveiling of the official Proposition 479 road sign, which will be installed at future project sites.
“Projects like the Loop 303 and I-17 interchange represent exactly what our industry does best — building the infrastructure that keeps Arizona moving forward,” said David Martin, president of the Arizona Chapter AGC. “Proposition 479 ensures that contractors, engineers, and skilled workers across our state will continue delivering the roads, bridges, and transportation systems that support economic growth and quality of life for our communities. The Arizona Chapter AGC is proud to help bring industry and public leaders together to celebrate the start of this important investment in our region.”
The interchange project is expected to improve freight movement, strengthen regional connectivity and support growth in the northwest Valley.
The Arizona Chapter of the Associated General Contractors of America represents highway, heavy and industrial contractors, subcontractors, suppliers and service providers across the state’s construction industry.
