April 9, 2019 - Working safely on or next to roads is the focus of a new campaign from the International Powered Access Federation (IPAF), launched at Bauma 2019 in Germany.

IPAF’s Street Smart safety campaign outlines the dangers of using mobile elevating work platforms (MEWPs) on or next to roads. With the risk of being struck by a passing vehicle such as bus or truck, prior planning is needed so the MEWP can operate safely.

Universal Equipment President Alastair Robertson Dies

Longtime MEWP industry veteran and advocate Alastair Robertson, president of Universal Equipment in Glen Ellyn, Illinois, died Jan. 30, 2019. He was 69.

Robertson, who was born Oct. 28, 1949, started in the MEWP industry in 1981 as a sales manager for Simon Aerials, which was subsequently purchased by Terex, followed by roles at Economy Engineering (acquired by Snorkel), Snorkel, Grove Manlift, and Skyjack. He then worked at S and R Equipment, JLG’s dealer in Chicago, from 1991 to 1995.

Registration Opens for Safety 2019 Conference in New Orleans

The American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) announced that registration is open for the Safety 2019 Professional Development Conference and Exposition, the nation’s largest conference for occupational safety and health professionals.

The conference expects to draw more than 5,000 attendees from 40 countries, and it is set for June 9-12 at the New Orleans Ernest N. Morial Convention Center.

United Rentals, Serious Labs Partner on Virtual Reality MEWP Training

United Rentals is partnering with Serious Labs Inc. to provide virtual reality (VR) MEWP training as part of its blended learning model for operator certification.

This model – new to the equipment rental industry – debuted on Nov. 28 when United Rentals opened its first United Academy training center with VR simulation in Alberta, Canada.


The Ryze SBL (Scissor and Boom Lift) Simulator is intended to supplement actual equipment training by offering a safe, blended learning solution. The virtual reality (VR) software consists of 33 training scenarios, including three 20-minute practical evaluations that meet industry requirements for boom lifts, slab lifts, and diesel rough-terrain scissor lifts. The simulator allows the operator to attempt IPAF and ANSI training requirements in a dynamic environment without risk of physical harm.

IPAF Issues Guides for New ANSI A92 Standards
